This group of children is currently attending the “big school” as it is so affectionately called while they are still in preschool. These children range in grade from Kindergarten to 5th grade. They are with us for before and afterschool time, in-service days, snow days, school holidays and/or summer camp. The older children relish the idea of assisting the younger children their transition to Kindergarten. They have been paired with our graduating pre-k students attending same schools as buddies during the first few days.
In our Before and After School Program, the children enjoy burning off some steam outside after a healthy snack upon arrival. Our school age teachers assist children with homework, as well. It is not uncommon to see the older children helping the younger children with homework as well.
We have a great focus on character development in this program, incorporated daily into the routine. We have adopted a local nursing home that this group visits regularly. They assist with Game Time, bring gifts and have put on performances for the residents. This is an essential feature of our program. They truly enjoy the experience.
Summer Camp generally consists of out of building activities three to four days per week. These activities are educational in nature and rooted in FUN. We maintain a focus on sustainability each summer. Topics may include water conservation and how we obtain clean water, recycling/reusing materials and gardening to name a few. We recognize the need to maintain skills in reading and math throughout the summer months and incorporate these skills in to our daily activities as well. Lasting memories are made visiting the local parks, sharing in service to others and having fun. They are sure to want to return year after year.
